ROBERT PLANT AND THE BAND OF JOY

Rounder Records is excited to announce that Robert Plant has confirmed a 12-date North American tour, which will make a stop at the Santa Barbara Bowl on Monday, April 25th. Tickets go on sale Saturday, January 22 at 11am.

Beginning April 8 in Louisville, KY, this will be the third leg of touring on these shores in support of the triumphant release of his latest album, Band of Joy, which Rolling Stone magazine in its four-star review called "sweet, elegant folk that still swings like Satan's barn door.

" The touring band is the same that made the record and that is currently touring the States: Patty Griffin, vocals; Darrell Scott, multi-instrumentalist/vocals; Byron House, bass/vocals; Marco Giovino, drums and percussion/vocals, and co-producer Buddy Miller, guitar/vocals. The response to Band of Joy has been glowing. The album has been nominated for two Grammy Awards ("Best Americana Album" and "Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance"), and appeared on numerous year-end best-of lists, including the Rolling Stone Top 30, the Spin Top 40, the American Songwriter Top 50, the Uncut Top 50 and the Q Top 50, to name a few. Time called the new album "smoldering," while Entertainment Weekly noted that Plant "sounds vocally reenergized."

Spin described the songs as "moonshine-soaked country blues with a gospel undercurrent," and American Songwriter claimed that the record "reveals another side of Plant's persona, and touches on all the places he's been while simultaneously pointing to an appealing, restless future." The Washington Post hailed, "Plant has nuance and subtlety to match his power and range," while the New York Times raved that the performances on Band of Joy are "consistently surprising." At radio, the album's first single "Angel Dance" was #1 at Triple A for a month, while the new single, "Can't Buy My Love" was just most added at R&R.

Don’t miss your chance to see the legendary Robet Plant and the Band of Joy perform at the Santa Barbara Bowl Monday, April 25th. Tickets range from $43.00 to $73.00, plus applicable service charges. The Santa Barbara Bowl is located at 1122 N. Milpas, Santa Barbara, CA 93103, 805-962-7411.

OPENING & CLOSING NIGHT GALAS

SBIFF 2011 will kick off at the historic Arlington Theatre with the U.S. Premiere of “Sarah’s Key” directed by Gilles Paquet-Brenner and starring Kristin Scott Thomas.  Based on the international bestselling novel by Tatiana de Rosnay, the film beautifully interweaves two seemingly different stories, illustrating a remarkable connection between the past and present.  The first story is that of Sarah, a ten year old Jewish girl living in Paris during World War II. The second story follows Julia (Kristin Scott Thomas), an American journalist living in modern day Paris with her French husband assigned to write a story on the Vel’d’Hiv roundup of 1942, and upon investigation discovers she has a personal connection. The film takes an emotional look into a historical event long hidden, but now sure to never be forgotten.  Following the Opening Night screening the festivities will continue with a party at Paseo Nuevo in downtown Santa Barbara.  Opening night Film and Gala is sponsored by The Hollywood Reporter and Studio 7.  Kristin Scott Thomas and Gilles Paquet-Brenner will be in attendance.

On Closing Night, SBIFF is proud to feature the Premiere of Georges Bizet’s popular opera “Carmen in 3D,” a dazzling film directed by Julian Napier filled with some of the best-loved music ever written, performed by some of the world’s greatest singers and marking the first time ever that an opera has been filmed and shown in state-of-the-art digital 3D.  A co-production of 3D movie pioneer RealD and London’s internationally renowned Royal Opera House, “Carmen in 3D” gives the viewers the best seat in the house, taking them on a magic carpet ride onto the stage, behind the scenes and into the heart of the emotional production, immersing them as never before into this timeless story of love, jealousy and betrayal. Closing Night festivities take place at the historic Arlington Theatre and are sponsored by SB Independent and RealD.

Groove studio Welcomes New Staff Writer Daniel Wilcox

I am pleased to announce that Noted Author and Writer Daniel Wilcox has joined Groove Studio One to write for our Personal Interest and Editorial Features. Daniel has extensive credits to his name and I am sure that you will find his work both topical and poignant.

Daniel Wilcox hiked through Cal State Long Beach (Creative Writing), Montana, Europe, Palestine/Israel; worked in a mental institution, and taught literature to teenagers. He has experienced a slew of too many problems to bury. Daniel is one of those odd ducks (not a swan) who’s stuffed with corny humor and weighed down by very light waved philosophical conundrums.

His writing has appeared in many prominent magazines, and a book of his poetry, Dark Energy, was published last year by Diminuendo Press.

Look forward to many great articles stories and maybe even some poetry, if he so chooses to grace us with it. You can follow Daniel’s work on the other online venues listed below.
